Detaljhandel stormarknader i Sverige!

How to Build a Contemporary Dining Table!

It’s really saying something that this DIY contemporary dining table has been on my “to build” list for over two years.  I mean, after two years, normally I would have either built it already, or changed my mind on the design I wanted (because, hello, my middle name is Indecisive), and this wouldn’t even be a thing anymore. But since we had a perfectly good dining table at the old house, Danny wasn’t about to let me build a new one any time soon, so I just tucked the idea away for “someday.”  And surprisingly, after two years of waiting for “someday,” I STILL hadn’t changed my mind on the design I wanted for my next dining table.  And that’s how I knew this was “the one.”

.

So after we sold our old house and the buyers wanted to keep our old dining table with the house (HALLELUJAH because the thing was a BEAST and I did NOT want to have to move it), I figured this was my chance!  I was going to build this modern style dining table ASAP before I changed my mind last minute haha.  That happens sometimes and it’s ALWAYS a bad idea.So as soon as we got to the point in our garage apartment build where I could make the table, I jumped on it.  We were actually in the middle of the Jeffrey Court Fall Renovation Challenge and I decided that before I took my “final reveal photos,” I really needed the table finished so it looked like a real life kitchen.

DIY Contemporary Dining Table Made From Poplar

I didn’t really have time to be building a table when I needed to be finishing trim and paint touch ups, but I mean, there’s never really a good time for anything, so I just jumped in at the most inconvenient time.  Makes sense…Lots of people have told me poplar is ugly.  That’s cool.  I’m not offended.  But, personally, I love it.  So if you want to go with a different wood type, feel free.  But I like poplar and I liked that since our new garage apartment is so open, that the dining table would match the bed and nightstands I made from poplar right before we moved, too.  (Also, stay tuned for a “house tour” of our little studio apartment space so that it makes more sense when I say it’s all open 😉 ).

tep 1: Prepare Your Lumber for the Contemporary Table Build

So if you decided to build yours from 1x or 2x pine or spruce boards, you don’t really have to do anything to your boards to prepare them UNLESS you want to go ahead and plane them and square off the edges anyway.  Totally up to you and your OCD level haha.

.

But I got my lumber rough sawn.  So first, I planed all my wood to the same thickness.  Then, I sorted through my boards to find some pretty wider ones that I wanted to use for the top.  When you get lumber from the hardwood place (at least the one that I go to, anyway), you don’t get to specify the board widths.  You kind of get whatever you get.  So before you start cutting, it’s good to decide which boards will work for each piece of whatever you are building so that you can have the least amount of wasted material.

.

So I chose four wider boards that I could use together to build a 36” wide table top.  I cut them down to about 7 1/2 ft long, then ran them through the table saw to get two nice, smooth, square edges to glue up.  I did the same thing for the leg pieces—found some that were at least 7” wide, trimmed them to 8 pieces 32” long, and ran them through the table saw to get square edges and to make them all the same width of about 6” wide.  And finally, I did the same for the table apron, only these were about 3” wide—two were  cut to about 7 1/2 foot long and 2 about 36” long.

Step 2:  Prepare Table Legs

Now that I had all my table pieces chosen and sorted through, I focused on the legs first.  Once I had all my leg pieces ripped down to about 6” wide (a standard 1×6 or 2×6 board will be 5 ½” instead of 6”.   That’s fine…it’ll work either way for this), I trimmed them down to their final length of 29” on my miter saw.

Then I paired them up and assembled using dowels.  In each pair (each pair will become one leg), I drilled 3/8” dowel holes using my dowel jig IN one edge of one piece and ALONG the edge of the other.  It makes more sense when you look at the pictures below.  It doesn’t really matter where you drill your holes as long as they line up on both pieces.

Once the dowel holes were drilled, I applied wood glue along the seam and inside the holes, placed 3/8” dowels in the holes, and glued and clamped together.

Once all four legs were assembled, while the glue dried, I moved onto the next steps.

Step 3:  Assemble the Table Top

Okay, so things got really busy about this time, so I don’t have a ton of pictures for this part, but it’s straightforward.  Next, I glued up the tabletop.  It’s a simple process, but I show you how I do it in this post.  Simply apply glue to the edges of the tabletop boards and use pipe clamps to clamp in place until the glue dries.  You can see it clamped up drying here.  The table apron from the next step is also gluing and drying here as well.

Once I had my tabletop glued together, I trimmed the short edges to make them nice and flush using a circular saw and a straight edge like my Kreg AccuCut.  I trimmed mine down to 6 ½” foot.  Then I sanded…and sanded….and sanded….and sanded.

Step 4:  Assemble the Table Apron

Now that the legs are glued, and the top is glued, the final piece is the apron.  This is very simple as well.  Basically, here, I’m creating a wooden rectangle that’s overall size is 1” smaller on all sides than the tabletop.  See the above picture.

.

So, my tabletop is 36” x 78”, and my apron needed to be 34” x 76”.  So I cut two pieces of 3” wide (or if you are using x4 material, 3 ½” wide is fine), board to 76” and two at 32” long.  Using dowels again, I glued this together so that the shorter pieces were INSIDE the longer pieces to make a rectangle 34” x 76” overall.  I could have/should have used a few more supports throughout the middle, here.  But I don’t plan on dancing or standing on my tabletop, so I really didn’t think it needed a ton of extra support in the middle.  But feel free to add some more if you’d like.

.

You can see a picture here of my tabletop gluing and my apron gluing on top of it.  I apologize for the lack of pictures during the tabletop and apron assembly.  I was in a hurry—I actually came back to the construction site after Danny’s nephew's birthday party late that night just to glue up this apron so that the glue would be dry the next morning to work on the next steps.  There was no time to be wasted.

Step 5:  Assemble the Table

Now for the fun part—putting all the pieces together.  So I had the legs, the top, and the apron all ready to go.  All that was left was to put the three together.

.

You can see from the pictures and the video, that I simply glued and screwed the legs in place on the outside corners of the apron so that the top of the leg was about 1” from the top of the apron.  It’s easiest to lay the legs on the ground and the apron on top, but it’s also helpful to do this from the top side, and just have a helper hold the leg in place while you drive the screws.

Caring for your newborn – some simple tips Date posted: 21 Aug 2017

Caring for your newborn – some simple tips

caring for newborn

Taking care of your new born involves care and utmost hygiene, so that your tiny tot does not fall ill.

The most exciting and memorable day of your life was the day you brought your baby home. Even before the baby arrived, you spent all your time decorating the nursery and cleaning the house. And then your cleaning duties quadrupled after the baby arrived. Since the immune systems of infants are not quite developed, they can catch infections faster. There is no alternative but to keep the house as free of germs as possible.

Check out these simple tips for new born baby care:

Wash your hands often. The monsoon season brings with it cooling breezes and a whole lot of germs. The damp atmosphere encourages fungal and bacterial growth all over the house. You might inadvertently carry flu or common cold germs to your baby, so the best thing to do is wash your hands with Dettol antibacterial soap multiple times during the day. Wash your hands before you prepare the baby’s formula, give the baby a bath, handle the sippy cup or teething ring, and even when dressing or changing the baby. Wash all of baby’s things in antibacterial soap or detergent and let them air dry before use.

Keep away if you’re unwell. It is common to catch a cold during this season, and equally easy to pass it on to your baby. It is best to keep away from your baby if you have a fever or a runny nose. If you must handle the baby (for feeding or changing), wear latex gloves and don a clean set of clothes before picking up the child.

Store baby’s diapers in a dry place. All items that are left undisturbed for some period of time will attract mould and fungal growth. These can cause skin irritation for your baby. Always buy sealable diaper packets and keep naphthalene balls or silica gel packets in the diaper drawer to absorb moisture. Keep wipes, talcum powder and a changing flannel in the same drawer, so that you can change the baby quickly.

Disinfecting the house. New born care also includes keeping the house unconditionally clean. Apart from flies and mosquitoes flying in and spreading diseases, your house might attract cockroaches, germs, fungal and bacterial infections. Spraying all plastic, metal and glass surfaces with Dettol Multi-Use Hygiene antibacterial liquid cleaners, mopping the floors with disinfectant soap and using Dettol Multi-Purpose cleaning wipes on spills will keep germs and bacterial infections at bay. Focus your energies on keeping the kitchen, bathroom and wash basin clean and free of germs. Also get your house fumigated to keep flies and other insects away.

Be careful with baby’s clothes. You wash your hands before handling the baby and put several hygiene checks in place to keep your house clean. It is prudent to exercise similar precautions with the baby’s clothes and toys as well. The baby’s clothes should not be washed with the rest of your laundry load. Wash the baby’s clothes and intimates separately with fabric softener and mild anti-bacterial detergent. Air dry all the clothes and accessories, and steam dry any metal or rubber implements or toys. Also, even if your baby wears diapers and there is minimal chance of bedwetting, do change the baby’s bedding every two days to keep germs away.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY WITH MY ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING TIPS

Huge discounts, better organisation, and more ‘me’ time are just some of the many benefits you’ll experience from doing your grocery shopping online!

I recently started online grocery shopping, and I can’t for the life of me work out why it took me this long to do so! It has meant so much more than simply saving time and money, and I have actually got the whole process down to quite a fine art. I honestly don’t think I will EVER look back!
I was always a little reluctant to do all my grocery shopping online. I liked to touch and see the food I was buying, and was convinced that walking the aisles myself was necessary in order to save money and be inspired for meal times. Oh how wrong I was! It turns out there are actually HEAPS of savings that are available ONLY to online shoppers, and the freshness of my fruit and veggies is as good as if I’d picked them myself. I also feel like I have a bonus hour each week because I no longer do my routine trip to the supermarket each weekend!
If you have been hesitant about shopping online, please keep reading. I feel like grocery shopping online has been a game-changer for me, helping to simplify my weekends that little bit more.

So what are some of the tricks and tips to making online grocery shopping work for you?

1. MANAGE YOUR BUDGET

ONLINE ONLY OFFERS – with online grocery shopping, not only am I able to shop the in-store sales, but I can shop the exclusive Online Only Offers too! I didn’t even realise that Woolworths offered these discounts until recently, but basically they put a range of products on sale each week purely for online shoppers. I have started buying items from this section in bulk, which in turn saves me even more money!
I recently picked up a few bottles of this Rose & Geranium Hand Wash which were on sale in the Online Only Offers.

EASILY STICK TO BUDGET – when I finish my online order and get to checkout, I sometimes see that I’ve ordered beyond my weekly budget. I have the chance to remove items from my cart (ice-cream and chocolate are usually the first things to go) or replace with a cheaper alternative. When shopping in-store I used to gasp when they told me the total, but it’s a little harder (and more embarrassing) to scavenge through the bags and give items back to the checkout assistant.

2. EASILY BUY IN BULK

It is so easy to buy items in bulk when shopping online, because you don’t have the hassle of actually carting the additional items around the supermarket and piling them on to the checkout. You also don’t have to contend with other people wondering why you’re buying so many rolls of toilet paper – LOL!
In addition to the Online Only Offers that Woolworths offers, they also have Bulk Bundles that are exclusively available to online shoppers – helping you save even more money on your shop!
Woolworths also gives you all the specials for your regular purchase, you’ll find these under “my weekly picks”. I go through this list each week and purchase items I know we use frequently like cereal, tuna, and washing detergent. I buy enough to last a few weeks.

3. SHOP QUICKER

I’m not just talking about removing the time it takes to drive to the supermarket and walk the aisles (although I do love not having to do this anymore!), I am talking about being able to save multiple online shopping lists so that I can easily and quickly place my orders. I’ve created a fortnightly and monthly list for the items I don’t need as often, and I check each week if they are on special and will add to cart if they are. I have also set up an Essentials List, which is packed with all my regular items – feel free to check out my list and use it too!
I’m so excited to partner together with Woolworths who have allowed me to share my own personal lists with you all, helping to save you time when you’re doing your weekly shop too.

4. BE REMINDED

Woolworths have a great system where they know what you regularly buy, and they will remind you before checkout if you have forgotten some of the items you usually add to the cart. Darn you Woolworths for reminding me how much I love the new mini summer rolls.

4. BE INSPIRED

Woolworths Dinner Bundles are only available to online shoppers and are a great way to fill the family up on nights when you’re lacking a little inspiration. I also like that if I am inspired by a recipe that I see during the week, I can easily add the ingredients to my online shopping list from my phone, ready for dinner the following week!

5. GET ORGANISED + AVOID MULTIPLE TRIPS

It’s much easier to plan dinners and school lunches for the week at the same time as I’m doing my grocery shop. I simply fill out my Weekly Meal Planner and Lunch Box Planner Pad for the week ahead, and then make sure all necessary ingredients are included in my online order. Being able to do my grocery shopping from the kitchen also means I can check what items I actually have in the pantry and fridge, which prevents me doubling up on these things, whilst also allowing me to easily replenish items so I don’t run out during the week.

6. SHOP ON YOUR TIME

Being able to grocery shop from home when the kids are doing their homework or whilst I’m watching TV means my afternoons and weekends – when I used to do my shopping – have now opened up. I am now free to spend this time doing things I love instead; like cooking, reading a book, watching Netflix shows I love, or spending quality time with my family and fur babies. I also love that I can add items to my online shopping list throughout the week when I notice that things are running out – and I can do this from my phone or my computer.

7. GET THE CONVENIENCE OF DELIVERY, PICK UP, AND NOW DRIVE THRU

PICK UP – I pick my online grocery order up from Woolworths on my way home from work for FREE! I usually order the night before for pickup the following afternoon. It is so convenient, and it costs me nothing! I’ve only recently discovered that I can do this. My local Woolworths has a drive thru pick up and they help you pack it into your car… winning!! I had always thought that online groceries had to be delivered to your door, but I found it hard to give a 3 hour window for when I was going to be home. Now I can track my order to the hour and also select ‘leave unattended’ if I think I might need to pop out for the school run.

MY TOP TIPS FOR ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING

Online grocery shopping and picking up from drive-thru is my new thing, and I preach to everyone that will listen lately that they should give it a go. Here are a few of my tips:
  1. Take your time to perfect your ordering system – it took me 3 goes to fine tune my online ordering process, so give yourself time to learn and understand how to order online.
  2. Create lists – Create lists to help make shopping easier.
  3. Use the search option – choose from a variety of different display options for your search results. If you are wanting to save, use the ‘sort by lowest unit price’. I LOVE this feature!
  4. You can start adding to cart and continue adding to it throughout the week – place your order anywhere.  You can start your order while waiting at the doctors for your appointment, while in your lunch break at work and finish it off the night before you want to pick it up. If you start an order from my phone, you can even complete it later from your computer because it remembers you!
  5. Double check your produce quantities – on one of my first orders I thought I was ordering 10 potatoes, but instead I ordered 10 packs of 2kg of potatoes. Woolworths were very kind and allowed me to return 9 packs 🙂
  6. Add notes to items – for example, I like to receive a few green bananas so I know they last through the week, and if I know I am making a mince dinner 5 days from my order date, I add a not asking for the expiry date to be beyond that date of 5 days.
  7. Items get substitutes – if they don’t have an item in stock they they will replace it with the closest match at the same price.
  8. Let them know when you’re there – as they get your order ready and will have it waiting for you when you arrive.
  9. Hot chooks – I have found you can’t order hot BBQ chooks online. We love a nice BBQ chook on rolls for lunch on weekends, so I usually get one of the kids (mine are teens) to run into the store to get it while I go through drive through to pick up the groceries.
  10. Use tubs – to pack items into your car and easily take into the house.Tips for online grocery shopping

Chicken Burgers!

Chicken burgers get a bad rap. They're super lean, which can sometimes read as boring. Not these burgers, though! Spiced with smoked paprika and loaded with crunchy, bright coleslaw, these burgers rival their beef counterparts.
